all posts by Dr. Gedaliah AftermanDr. Gedaliah Afterman is a former diplomat and foreign policy expert. He is currently Head of the Asia Policy Program at the Abba Eban Institute for Diplomacy and International Relations and a Fellow at the Centre for Advanced Security, Strategic and Integration Studies (CASSIS) at the University of Bonn. He is also a lecturer at Reichman and Tel Aviv Universities.
His work focuses on Asian regional security, Chinese foreign policy, and issues related to superpower competition and the growing role of middle powers in Asia and the Middle East. Gedaliah has worked closely with partners in the region on establishing Asia-Middle East-Europe strategic partnerships, particularly following the Abraham Accords. He is also an active member of the MENA 2050 organisation committed to driving regional development and fostering a joint regional vision
for the future in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.
He previously served as an International Strategic Policy Specialist at the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs (DFAT), where he focused on Asian regional security issues, and as a diplomat at the Australian Embassy in Beijing, where he worked on issues related to China’s foreign policy, including the Middle East. He was also a Fellow and China Program Lead at Jerusalem’s JPPI.
Gedaliah is a prolific contributor to the international media, regularly writing and conducting interviews for renowned publications such as The New York Times, Financial Times, Foreign Policy, the Economist, LA Times, Nikkei Asia, South China Morning Post (SCMP), Asia Times, East Asia Review, The Australian, Haaretz, and The Jerusalem Post.
Gedaliah holds a PhD from The University of Melbourne.
