Against the backdrop of the war with Iran and the broader regional escalation, Mitvim Executive Director Dr. Gil Murciano participated in a panel on the implications of the conflict at the J Street annual conference in Washington, alongside leading experts from the Washington Institute and the Atlantic Council. The discussion took place as the events unfolded and focused on the immediate policy questions facing decision-makers.
In his remarks, Dr. Murciano stressed that Israel currently stands at a genuine strategic crossroads. He distinguished between the objective of toppling the Iranian regime – a goal that could turn into a futile and endless pursuit – and undermining the regime, to alter its motivations and force new conditions on core strategic issues.
He also highlighted the importance of honor and humiliation in strategic calculations, warning that without allowing Iran a way to step back from the confrontation without appearing defeated or humiliated, it will be difficult to move from a military campaign to a diplomatic track.
“Military achievements, however significant, must ultimately be translated into long-term political achievements,” he said.
