Dr. Nimrod Goren is President and Founder of Mitvim – The Israeli Institute for Regional Foreign Policies, Co-Founder of Diplomeds – The Council for Mediterranean Diplomacy, and Senior Fellow for Israeli Affairs at the Middle East Institute. Nimrod is also Co-Chair of a regional initiative at President Isaac Herzog’s Israeli Climate Forum. He holds a Ph.D. in Middle Eastern Studies from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and was a Hubert Humphrey Fellow at Syracuse University’s Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs. He was a Teaching Fellow on Middle Eastern Studies at the Hebrew University, a visiting fellow at J Street  and has also worked at the Harry S. Truman Research Institute for the Advancement of Peace, the Jerusalem Institute for Israel Studies and the Nehemia Levtzion Center for Islamic Studies. Nimrod is a past recipient of the Victor J. Goldberg Prize for Peace in the Middle East and the Centennial Medal of the Institute of International Education, and was selected as a Vamik Volkan Scholar by the International Dialogue Initiative. He serves on the steering committees of the Geneva Initiative and the Turkish-Israeli Civil Society Forum, on the board of the Center for Enterprising Citizens, and is a member of the Global Diplomacy Lab. His areas of expertise include diplomacy, regional cooperation and peacemaking, with a focus on Israel’s foreign policy and regional relations, the Middle East peace process, and Turkey’s foreign policy.

Anat Cohen Specht is a member of the Board of Directors of Mitvim. She earned her Executive MBA and her BA in Humanities and the History of Art from Tel Aviv University. She is also a board member for Partner Communications and an external director on the Board of Directors of the Israel Airports Authority. She is a managing partner at UrbaniPro, a global real estate investment company and a strategic consultant. Previously, she served from 2015-2017 as the CEO of Suny Cellular Communications Ltd, and prior to that, she served in various senior positions in private telecommunication companies. Her expertise lies in management, financials, organizations processes and procedures.

Dr. Ilham Shahbari is a member of the Board of Directors at the Mitvim Institute and a scientific adviser at the Ministry of Environmental Protection and the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology. Her projects focus on climate change risks and food security. Shahbari is also a researcher at the Institute for National Security Studies (INSS). Her current research investigates the relationship between the Jewish majority and the Arab minority in Israel, including community resilience. Recently, she was appointed as an advisor to the Director General of Israel’s Ministry for Social Equality.

In her most recent position, Dr. Shahbari worked as an Associate Lecturer in the Middle East and Terrorism Department at Salford University, UK. Prior to that, she served as a Parliamentary Advisor and Media Consultant for Israeli politicians, before joining the Israeli Ministry of Economy, where she held several positions, most recently as Senior Project Manager for promoting foreign investments.

Dr. Shahbari was awarded a Ph.D. in Politics and International Relations by the University of Bradford, UK. The title of her doctoral dissertation is “Internationalization of the National Aspirations of the Palestinian-Arab Citizens of Israel.” She holds a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) in Arabic and Hebrew Languages from Oranim College, as well as postgraduate degrees from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem: a Master’s in Policy, Management & Leadership in Education (M.A.); and an Executive Master of Public Policy (M.A.). Her expertise includes: the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, ethnic minorities and human rights, parliamentary diplomacy, Middle East politics and international relations.

Shahbari is a member of foreign relations team of Women Wage Peace (WWP), a member of the Shrinking the Conflict movement and a member of the Police National Thinking Forum for combating crime and violence in Arab society.

Ambassador Daniel Shek is a member of the Board of Directors of Mitvim. Since leaving public service, he is a private consultant, teaches at Tel Aviv University and serves as a regular commentator on I24News. Anat joined the Fulbright Commission in October 2014. Prior to joining Fulbright Israel, she was senior research fellow and Academic Director of the Mediterranean Program at the Van Leer Jerusalem Institute. She is founding editor of Journal of Levantine Studies, a semiannual Academic journal. She taught Middle Eastern studies and Turkish Studies at the Department of International Relations at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Between 2009-2014 she headed the Israeli network of the Anna Lindh Foundation for Intercultural Dialogue. Anat received her BA in Jewish History and Middle Eastern Studies from Tel Aviv University, and holds a PhD from the Department of Politics, the University of Durham, U.K.

Ilai Saltzman is Associate Director of the Israel Institute for Academic Programs in Washington DC, USA. He completed his doctorate in International Relations at the University of Haifa in 2010, his Master’s Degree in International Relations at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (2006) and his Bachelor’s Degree in International Relations and General Studies at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem (2003).

He completed his postdoctoral fellowship in the Security Studies program at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University (2009-2010).

He has published a book and a series of articles in the field of defense studies and foreign policy studies of the United States and Israel, as well as European security policy, and the grand strategy of Japan and China.

Colette Avital is a member of the Board of Directors at the Mitvim Institute.

Avital immigrated to Israel from Romania in her youth. She began her career in the Foreign Ministry, where she held numerous positions in Israel and abroad. Her domestic positions included Acting Director of Publicity; Director of Training with responsibility for the status of women; Deputy Director General with responsibility for Publicity, Communications, Culture and Public Relations; and Deputy Director General for Western Europe. Among her prominent overseas positions, Avital served as Publicity and Press Officer in Montreal; First Secretary for Press and Culture in Brussels; Consul and then Consul General in Boston; Deputy General Counsel in Paris; Ambassador to Lisbon; and Consul General of the New York Embassy.

Avital entered in Israeli politics in 1999. She joined the Labor Party and served as a Knesset member in the 15th, 16th, and 17th governments; in this time she served on committees for education and culture, constitution and law, and security, amongst others. She chaired the Immigration, Absorption, and Diaspora Committee, and was Deputy Chair of the Knesset. As an MK, Avital established a committee to examine the issue of restoring property to Holocaust survivors, and published a report on the subject in 2005. At the end of that year, the Knesset passed a law establishing a company for the restoration of property to Holocaust victims.

Avital is extensively involved in public activity and has been honored with numerous awards including the Legion d’honneur of the French government and the Cavaliere OMRI of the Italian government. She holds a BA from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and an MA from Harvard University. She also holds honorary doctorates from the University of Rochester and the University of Wheaton.

Ehud (Udi) Eiran is a Board Member at Mitvim and an Assistant Professor of International Relations at the University of Haifa. Dr. Eiran holds degrees in Law and Political Science from Tel-Aviv University, Cambridge University, and Brandeis University. He held research appointments at Harvard Law School, Harvard’s Kennedy School, and Brandeis University and was a visiting lecturer in the Department of Political Science at MIT. Prior to his academic career Dr. Eiran held a number of positions in the Israeli civil service including clerking for two Attorney Generals, and as Assistant to the Prime Minister’s Foreign Policy Advisor. Dr. Eiran has published numerous analytical pieces in popular and scholarly outlets including the New York Times.com, Foreign Affairs.com, Newsweek, and the Harvard Negotiation Law Review. Eiran was a guest on leading American shows such Charlie Rose and NPR’s On-Point. Eiran is interested in practical and theoretical aspects of international conflict and conflict resolution, with a particular interest in the Arab-Israeli conflict and in spatial aspects of international conflicts.

Elie Podeh is Bamberger and Fuld Professor in the History of the Muslim Peoples in the Department of Islamic and Middle East Studies, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He served as the Department Chair during the years 2004-2009, and President of the Middle East and Islamic Studies Association of Israel (MEISAI) during the years 2016-2022. Since 2011 he is Board Member of Mitvim – The Israeli Institute for Regional Foreign Policies. He has published and edited sixteen books and more than eighty academic articles in English, Hebrew and Arabic. His recent book publications: Chances for Peace: Missed Opportunities in the Arab-Israeli Conflict (Austin: University Press of Texas, 2016); and Israel’s Secret Relations with States and Minorities in the Middle East, 1948-2020 (Hebrew, Am Oved, 2022; and English forthcoming in Indiana University Press).

Nadav Tamir is the Executive Director of JStreet Israel. He has dedicated his career to public service, joining the Israeli Foreign Ministry in 1993 and serving in multiple roles, including Political Officer at the Israeli Embassy in Washington, DC. In 2006, he was named Israeli Consul General to New England, a position he held until 2010. Upon returning to Israel, he joined the Policy Planning Unit of the Israeli Foreign Ministry where he served until accepting the position of senior adviser to President Shimon Peres. Nadav is an adviser for international affairs at the Peres Center for Peace and Innovation, and a member of the steering committee of the Geneva Initiative.

Nadav earned his MA from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government as a Wexner fellow and his BA in philosophy and political science from the Hebrew University. He currently resides in Givatayim with his wife, Dr. Ronit Tamir, and three children.
